RAF Hemswell There is a former Lancaster bomber station, RAF Hemswell at Hemswell Cliff, near to a small village about 10 miles east of Gainsborough and about 12 miles north of Lincoln where the administrative buildings are divided into antique shops of several kinds. There are some old tools. They are open all the year round, and have a restaurant. The Hemswell Antique Centres are on 01427 668389 (Omit leading zero from abroad).
When travelling southwards, do not go into Hemswell village, but proceed a few hundred yards further to the roundabout and turn left.
I have visited with a guest who took home several pieces of booty. There are plenty of portable antique items (and books) that might attract a SWMBO (or HWMBO) also. Regretably some Pukey Craft shops as well.
However, it is distant from the well-known tourist centres, (unless you want to visit Lincoln).

From Mike Field The town of Horncastle has for years been calling itself the Antiques Center of the Midlands, or Lincolnshire, not sure which. The whole town is devoted to antique shops - I can think of 12 or 14, and this does not include two or three large buildings housing 30 or 40 units covering every aspect of collecting.
The Old Tool Store is only a half hour's drive away.

Run by Ray Isles, Ashley Isles's son.
They offer a catalogue.

Richard Wilson reports: 'Each time I've phoned, I've enjoyed a brief chat and I've bought a couple of very nice shoulder planes from him.

He doesn't operate a 'galoot friendly' return policy, though I think he'll take a mis-described return at buyers expense. On the other hand, he's quite fair in describing his stock - but *you* will need to ask the questions.'

In February 1999 I found two old tool dealers worth a look at. They are in the arcades at the lower end of the road.
Go to Notting Hill Gate Tube station and follow the crocodile of tourists.

From Rob Weaver There is a flea market stall in the churchyard of St. Martins of the Fields in London, immediately adjacent Trafalgar Square, and an easy walk from Charing Cross underground station. There's an OAP (senior citizen for US-types) there by the name of John selling old tools. John says he's a retired curved staircase builder, and he's selling old tools on Saturday and Sunday.

Reported to have a rather neat pricing policy on their tools - rusty is 50 pence each, slightly better is on a shelf - £3 each. The Green Dragon Antique Center
